The Ephemeral Nature of Waves

A silent sequential book

This project is inspired by urge surfing, a therapeutic technique developed by Alan Marlatt and Judith Gordon. It views impulses born from intense emotions as waves to be surfed rather than resisted.

Structured as a silent sequential book, the work unfolds through four visual chapters - The Trigger, The Rise, The Peak, and The Fall - guiding the viewer from the first spark of urge to release and calm. The absence of text foregrounds the embodied and often pre‑verbal nature of emotional experience, while the sequential format emphasizes its unfolding in time as a process of transition rather than a fixed condition.

Conceived as both a visual journey and a contemplative tool, the work invites viewers to slow down and trust in the passing of inner waves. In doing so, it opens space for understanding healing not as a fixed endpoint, but as a continuous transition shaped by attention, time, and care.
